<![endif]-->I had a candidate who I sent in for an interview several months ago that told me he had been on a ride along and knew “the day in the life of a pharmaceutical rep.” I was short on time since the manager I was working with wanted to meet with him before vacation so I sent the candidate in without having had time enough to quiz him on his understanding of the business.

I received a call from the manager after the interview and was told he wanted to pass over the candidate. When I asked the pharmaceutical sales manager why he wanted to skip this candidate he told me the candidate needed to find out what a “day in the life of” is really like.

The manager went on to tell me that the candidate told him a typical pharmaceutical rep will see 20 - 30 doctors each day and see each doctor for about 30 minutes each. If you do the math you will quickly realize this is impossible to accomplish in a given day and in reality each physician is more than likely going to give you anywhere from thirty seconds to two minutes to state your case.

In conclusion, be sure you do your research and if possible go on a ride along with a pharmaceutical reps before you step foot into your first pharmaceutical sales interview.

I remember trying to get my first job as a waiter in college. I went from restaurant to restaurant applying away but was turned down since I did not have any experience. I often wondered if waiters were grown outback in a flower pot. One day a friend of mine told me to apply as a buser or work washing dishes and work my way up. I took his advice and soon found a job as a buser and six month later I was moved up and landed my first job as a waiter. Sure, there are always those luck few that apply without experience and land a job right away as a waiter but I had to work my way up, the same can be said for pharmaceutical sales jobs.

If you really want to get into pharmaceutical sales I suggest you start by working a B2B outside sales job first. Most pharmaceutical companies want to see a proven sales history and the ability to manage an outside sales territory. Specifically many of my clients liked to hire from companies like Paychex, ADP, Xerox, Pitney Bowes, and even Enterprise Rent A Car.

If your current job has you sitting behind a desk and you really want to get into pharmaceutical sales start by getting an outside sales job and you may find yourself in your dream job within six month to twelve months.

<![endif]-->Today’s pharmaceutical sales interview tip focuses upon the importance of grabbing a business card before you leave your interview. The first medical sales client I ever worked with eliminated the first candidate I sent in because the applicant did not ask for a business card.

It may seem a bit harsh but remember when you interview your sales skills are being evaluated. If you’re selling pharmaceuticals, medical products or medical devices you must grab a business card from the potential buyer in order to send a follow up thank you note and contact the potential buyer in the future.

Next time you land a pharmaceutical sales interview be sure and grab a business card from everyone you meet with and email them all a thank you. My next tip will deal with what to write inside your follow up email after a pharmaceutical sales interview.

Shameless plug: If you want to help keep this site alive and send your resume to over 100 pharmaceutical sales recruiters at once try our resume blasting service for a one time payment of only $11.99

Here is a “getting into pharmaceutical sales” quick tip when using online job sites. Applicants who add a recent phone number are more likely to be contacted vs those that post their email address only. Monster.com and careerbuilder.com have millions of resume to choose from. 9 times out of 10 pharmaceutical sales managers, pharmaceutical recruiters, and those in human resources are short on time.

When I used to do headhunting for pharmaceutical sales jobs and ran across a few dozen resumes online I thought might be a fit, I would pass on resumes that did not list a phone number; I was just too busy and under a deadline. I had to move onto the resumes that listed phone numbers so I could call those candidates right away. If I did not find who I wanted from the phone calls I would then go back and email candidates that listed emails only.

There is no doubt you will receive calls about jobs you do not want but be patient and if it gets out of hand try evoice.com.
