I had a candidate who I sent in for an interview several months ago that told me he had been on a ride along and knew “the day in the life of a pharmaceutical rep.”  I was short on time since the manager I was working with wanted to meet with him before vacation so I sent the candidate in without having had time enough to quiz him on his understanding of the business.

I received a call from the manager after the interview and was told he wanted to pass over the candidate.  When I asked the pharmaceutical sales manager why he wanted to skip this candidate he told me the candidate needed to find out what a “day in the life of” is really like.

The manager went on to tell me that the candidate told him a typical pharmaceutical rep will see 20 - 30 doctors each day and see each doctor for about 30 minutes each.  If you do the math you will quickly realize this is impossible to accomplish in a given day and in reality each physician is more than likely going to give you anywhere from thirty seconds to two minutes to state your case.

In conclusion, be sure you do your research and if possible go on a ride along with a pharmaceutical reps before you step foot into your first pharmaceutical sales interview.
